Are You Living in the Dark?

Are You Living in the Dark?

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said, “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Ephesians 5:11-16 NIV

Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are. It’s a scandal when people waste their lives on things they must do in the darkness where no one will see. Rip the cover off those frauds and see how attractive they look in the light of Christ. Wake up from your sleep, Climb out of your coffins; Christ will show you the light! So watch your step. Use your head. Make the most of every chance you get. These are desperate times!

Ephesians 5:11-16 MSG

The things that we are unwilling to share with others are the deeds of darkness. God is always calling us into the light. That means that He is calling us to share the happenings of our days and thoughts with others so that we may be fruitful.

The world would have us distracted by what those that are disobedient do and by the things we think should be kept under cover. Whether we use others as justification for our own actions or our own obedience as a source of pride in our own walk.

We must be careful of the snares left out by the enemy. Just as much as we are striving to obey God we must also be cognizant of not casting condemnation on others. Being in constant awareness of how we are living is paramount for knowing we are being obedient.

It is through our obedience that we are able to make the most of every opportunity God gives us. Our entire lives are being worked for our good (Romans 8:28). Let’s take a meaningful part in that work by noticing how we and others are living, not just with our actions, but also with our words.

Considerations for your planner:

  • Are there parts of your life you would not and do not share with others? Write them down and pray for the strength to bring them to the light.

A Prayer for Our Community:

Father, Thank You for keeping us honest in all our ways. We want to be elevated to Your ways and thoughts. Help us to recognize the things we are keeping in the dark. Give us the strength to bring them to the light. Likewise, help us to be a soft place where others can share their dark spaces so that healing can begin. Let us not be consumed by our own self righteousness that we are unable to be the light in someone else's life. Amen.
